I'm not dead

 Post dated: 1 Dec 2022

Dear Internet,

I’m back now!

The rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. I just finished my finals for the semester yesterday, and had a big hotpot buffet meal to celebrate.

Mmmmm... Hotpot

I think it’s really funny that I went completely radio silent pretty much a week after I launched this blog, but the next semester of my school started and it’s occupied pretty much all of my time.

Here’s what I’ve been up to this whole semester, other than the boring school stuff:

Internship searching

My school makes people do internships for a semester before you graduate, so I scrambled all of last semester to find a software engineering internship. This also means that I had to prepare for technical programming interviews, which can either be really fun or really dread-inducing depending on the type of person you are.

To prepare I did a bunch of LeetCode’s Blind 75 challenges, and even then I barely managed to snag an interview.

The interview being my first ever, I spilled my figurative spaghetti trying to explain how TwoSum worked, so I’m still kind of baffled as to how I actually got an offer. I start January with the compnay, and I hope I learn a lot 😊

I made a lamp

One of the modules I had to do for my semester boiled down to a product design class, which sounds cool but the teacher running the class frankly wasn’t very good at teaching anything.

So people my class essentially had to teach ourselves how to use Autodesk Inventor, and a rendering software of our choice (I chose Blender.)

The final project was to make a lamp, so here’s what I made:

My lamp

I called it “Snowdrop”.

I (helped) make an app

Another one of my modules was a semester-long group project where your group had to make an app.

We wrote an app using React Native that helps connect people looking to hitch rides, and people looking to save on gas money. I was in charge of building the UI!

Here’s what it looks like:

It’s not up anymore, by the way. We nuked the servers because some of the members were paying out of pocket for hosting and APIs.

In conclusion

It was a really busy semester, with 2 projects to juggle and 4 big, major classes to study for. I don’t think I did all that well, but que sera, sera, honestly. B’s and C’s get degrees!

I’ll have a lot more free time now, though, and won’t have to study for a whole semester on account of the whole internship thing. That means I’ll have the time to update my blog a lot more often.

Thanks for stopping by!

Love, yu-no
